a broadened definition of art part #1: graffiti

after the world was introduced to artists like banksy, swoon, keith haring, twister, and margaret kilgallen, graffiti was somewhat seen as an actual art rather than just pointless vandalism. banksy mixed his images with political messages. keith haring pieces were considered pop art. graffiti proved it could have reason and beauty. so here are some of very favorites. *jump*

swoon
caledonia dance curry, also known by the name swoon, is a female graffiti artist who makes life sized wheat paste prints and  posts them all throughout new york. she had her very first exhibition in 2005 and will hold her first london exhibition in 2011. she usually creates realistic looking people who are usually family and friends. i'm really looking forward to seeing a lot more from her.

margaret kilgallen
margaret kilgallen, who also went by the names slaughter and meta, was an artist from around the san fransisco area who's work was heavily based on folk art. she drew influence from everything from the warm colors used by mexican artists to the dying art of hand painted signs. her time was brief, she passed away from breast cancer in 2001, but her work continues to gain more and more popularity.

banksy
banksy is practically a household name within england. everyone's aware of the artists antics. they're posted in all of the world. he's even made it to occupy wall street, where he set up a monopoly statue. he was brave enough to post the work above in broad daylight. he's definitely a lefty on the political spectrum and has no reason to stop now.
